The Settings

With just six games left in the season, the atmosphere at Our Tampines Hub for Friday Night Football carried a different kind of tension, the sort that signals the title chase is now firmly alive. As the run-in begins to take shape, the margins are finer, the weight heavier, and the need to gather momentum more significant than ever. It is all about composure under pressure, with the focus firmly on putting together a strong finish.

Lineups

The sidelines saw a new chapter unfold as William Phang stepped in as Interim Head Coach. A trusted presence in The Stags backroom, he stepped forward when it mattered most. In the face of unprecedented changes, Tampines remain rooted in their identity, guided by the philosophy of Tampines Football.

The boys in Yellow and Black made just two changes to the Starting XI as Raoul Suhaimi and Joel Chew were back in the fold. Raoul slotted back in his familiar right-back position ahead of Irfan Najeeb. For Joel, it marked a long-awaited spot back in the lineup and a full-circle moment for the Stag with his last start from their previous outing with the Tigers in February.

Stalemate In The First Half

The Stand made their presence felt again, as they decked out in Tampines colours and their chants ringing out, building a familiar matchday atmosphere.

In the pre-match interview, Coach William said: “The team will give everything on the pitch.”

“We want to give a winning performance and win back the hearts of our fans,” he emphasised.

And the match told a story of The Stags identity, driven by perseverance.

From the opening whistle, any early signs of uncertainty were quickly erased. The Stags found their rhythm immediately. Sharp, connected, and a clear attacking edge.

In the 7th minute, Hide Higashikawa found himself with the game’s first big chance. He forced a quick double save from Mario Mustapić to deny him the opener. Trent Buhagiar tried his luck from distance in the 30th minute, but Mustapić got his fingertips on it to claw it inches past the post.

The game went into half-time goalless, but the scoreline only told part of the story. The Stags dictated the majority of the game in the Tiger’s half, carving out 12 shots compared to the Tigers’ lone attempt, but the breakthrough remained elusive.

The Stags Struck

After the restart, Tampines emerged with a sense of urgency, probing and prodding in search of a way through that could tilt the game in their favour.

The breakthrough arrived in the 47th minute when Yuki Kobayashi unleashed an outrageous free kick from range. It was an outstanding occasion for the former Japanese international as he notched his first goal for Tampines since his transfer in January.

Just minutes later, a defence-splitting pass from Yuki found Hide in the box, who sprinted towards goal and made no mistake to slot it into the back of the net. However, a VAR check chalked it off for a foul earlier in the build-up.

The Visitors Equalise

A familiar storyline unfolded again, with the boys in Yellow and Black forced to respond as the visitors turned up the pressure.

In the 63rd minute, The Tigers pulled one back through Daniel Goh, who swept home the equaliser after Jakov Katuša squared it neatly across the box for the latter to finish it through the middle. Undeterred, The Stags pushed on, keeping Balestier pinned back with sustained pressure and relentless waves of attack.

Eager to add a new spark and ignite a surge for the lead, Tampines turned to their bench with a decisive double change, as Seiga Sumi and Irfan Najeeb came on to replace Yuki and Raoul after the equaliser.

In the 71st minute, Hide unleashed a spectacular half-volley from outside the box only for it to rattle against the crossbar. Shortly after, Tampines introduced fresh legs in the attacking line. Joel made way for Taufik Suparno to enter the fray.

And the home side continued to push forward with intent. In the 77th minute, The Stags came agonisingly close. Mustapić turned away Hide’s cross into Shah Shahiran’s path, but his well-taken strike crashed off the crossbar again.

The Lead

Finally, in the 80th minute, Tampines made their wealth of efforts count.

Seiga marked his first league goal for The Stags in style, rising above the defence to meet the swinging delivery and nodding home what proved to be the winner. As the game came to a close, the final adjustment saw Zikos Chua introduced to the pitch deep in added time, in place of Koya Kazama.

A collective effort and a spirited Stags performance. That is what Tampines Football is all about.

The Reflections

Our Vice-Captain Shuya Yamashita credited the team’s performance, “Even though today is a tough game, it was a good performance from the team.”

On the final thoughts of the game, Interim Head Coach William Phang said in his post-match interview, “We will continue to work hard, create more chances and score more goals.”

Looking ahead towards the next few matches, he reiterated, “Every game is important to us. Whether it is our next game against the Young Lions or the following fixtures, we will do our best and put out a strong performance.”

Next Up

Shuya Yamashita expressed his appreciation for The Stand’s unwavering support throughout the match, “We really appreciate the fans’ support. And we hope you will keep supporting us!”

This victory keeps Tampines five points behind the league leaders, Lion City Sailors. All eyes now turn to our next match against the Young Lions for another fixture of Friday Night Football at Our Tampines Hub, as the countdown begins to the final five league games of this campaign.
