Chances Go Begging as Stags Fall Short in the Playback Community Shield

After almost three months away, Our Stags were finally back in action as they took on Lion City Sailors in the Playback Community Shield.

There were several new faces in the Tampines Rovers squad this 2026/27 season following the arrivals of Zharfan Rohaizad, Shodai Yokoyama, Kenshin Yamazaki and Yuma Kimura, alongside the re-signing of Takeshi Yoshimoto.

Excitement had already been building before kick-off, with the Playback Fanzone providing a lively backdrop of food, activities and plenty of anticipation for the return of local football.

Starting XI

Zharfan and Shodai were handed their official debuts, while Faris Ramli led Our Stags out as captain.

Denied by the Woodwork

From the opening exchanges, the match carried all the familiar hallmarks of a Tampines-Sailors showdown. Our Stags looked composed in possession, patiently building from the back and finding pockets of space to play through the Sailors' press.

The first warning came just six minutes in.

An overhit corner found Dylan Fox out wide, where he threaded a pass between two Sailors players into the path of Koya Kazama. The midfielder drove forward from inside his own half before trying his luck from distance, but his effort sailed over the bar.

It was the Sailors, however, who struck first.

In the 18th minute, Diogo Costa made an inside run before delivering a cross into the area, where Ilhan Fandi rose to head home the opening goal.

Seven minutes later, the Sailors doubled their advantage. An exchange of passes between Farhan Zulkifli and Bart Ramselaar released the former, whose cut-back found Ilhan once again. His effort came off the post and into the net to make it 2-0.

But Our Stags refused to go quietly.

Yuki Kobayashi unlocked the Sailors' defence in the 32nd minute with a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Hide Higashikawa. Sailors custodian Victor Aznar rushed off his line but failed to make the clearance, leaving Hide with sight of an open goal - only for his effort to agonisingly come back off the post.

Then, right on the stroke of half-time, Seiga Sumi unleashed a thunderous strike from range that rattled the crossbar.

Shah Shahiran, operating from the left wing, also delivered a tantalising cross onto the head of Hide, but this time Aznar was there to make the save.

The chances were coming. The goals, frustratingly, were not. Our Stags headed into the break two goals down, but far from out of the contest.

Second Half

Kenshin Yamazaki was introduced for his official debut at the start of the second half, replacing Faris on the right wing, and Tampines immediately went searching for a way back.

Within moments, Koya slipped another through ball behind the Sailors' defence for Hide. Through on goal, the forward pulled the trigger, but his effort struck the side netting.

As the second half wore on, both sides found themselves locked in a battle to break through increasingly stubborn defensive lines. Tampines continued to search for the opening that could spark a comeback, but the breakthrough never arrived.

The final whistle eventually brought the contest to a close, with Lion City Sailors crowned the 2026/27 Playback Community Shield winners.

Reflections

For Our Stags, it was a night of rued opportunities. On another evening, the efforts off the post and crossbar could easily have changed the complexion of the match. The result may not have been the one Tampines wanted, but after almost three months away, it was good to see Our Stags back where they belong - on the pitch, competing once again.

And there will not be long to wait for another opportunity. Our 2026/27 Singapore Premier League campaign begins on Friday, 11 September, when Our Stags return to Our Tampines Hub to face Balestier Khalsa in our first Home league fixture of the season.
