The Journey to the Knockouts
With the pulse of Asian football thundering at full volume, the AFC Champions League (ACL) Two knockout stage arrived with destiny calling for Tampines Rovers. The journey here was anything but ordinary. It was carved out through a statement victory over South Korean giants Pohang Steelers, forged in a gritty, unyielding battle with Thai heavyweights BG Pathum United, and sealed with a pulsating triumph against Philippines champions Kaya FC-Iloilo.
Grit, belief, and fearless football carried them here. This was no luck. To be among the continent’s best sixteen, this was hard-earned. The Stags didn't just qualify. They sent a shockwave through the region, proving that when the stakes are highest, this team thrives on the impossible.
But the Round of 16 promised another towering test. In the opposite end stood Công An Hà Nội (CAHN), a side that had already tasted victory against us. They had shown their edge. And they were determined to do it again.
Team News

The Stags chose to stay faithful to their tried, tested and proven approach - a consistent formula that had carried them through every challenge thus far. With just a single change from the previous encounter, Raoul Suhaimi was handed the nod ahead of Irfan Najeeb in the starting XI.
Yet, for CAHN, there was a dramatic overhaul with only Hugo Gomes, Vitão, and Rogério Alves retained from the last meeting. By fielding a strong, reimagined lineup, the Vietnamese giants were sending a clear message that they saw Tampines as a formidable opponent, worthy of their fiercest challenge.
For The Stags, there was only one task tonight: take the game till the end with no regrets. Match their intensity. Match their ambition. And when the moment comes, seize it. This is what Tampines fought for.
A Challenging Start
Our boys in Yellow and Black set the tone from the first whistle, pressing the home side high in their half with quick, relentless pursuits. Every pass was met with immediate pressure and every space was closed down with urgency, as Tampines looked to seize control and dictate the rhythm of the game early on.
However, the hosts kept piling the pressure, forcing the Stags to defend with relentless intensity. And the deadlock was broken shortly after.
In the 24th minute, Léo Artur’s thunderous shot from outside the box was brilliantly palmed away by Syazwan Buhari, only for Nguyen Quang Hai to pounce on the rebound, slotting it home - albeit just inches away from an offside call. The Vietnamese skipper then quickly doubled his tally of the night, with some quick footwork through The Stags’ backline before finishing it off calmly from close range.
Minutes later, Léo Artur released a powerful shot from distance again in the 36th minute, which deflected off Shuya’s header into the box. Rogério Alves reacted sharpest to the loose ball, hammering a volley that Syazwan heroically parried. However, the rebound fell kindly for the Brazilian, who tapped it home and secured Hanoi’s three-goal cushion before the interval.
A Resolute Fight
The Stags emerged back from the tunnel with a renewed sense of purpose. Their resolve was clear. They were ready to fight back with everything they had, embodying the Tampines spirit of never giving up.

The boys in Yellow and Black soon found their rhythm, with golden opportunities flashing before them. Just after the restart, Takeshi Yoshimoto unleashed a thunderous shot from distance, forcing Nguyen Filip into a crucial save. That was the Stags' first attempt on target of the night, a powerful signal of their shifting momentum and unwavering intent. Moments later, Hide Higashikawa expertly laid it off to Trent Buhagiar, who made a dazzling run on the counter, before unleashing a powerful attempt on goal but it soared just inches above the woodwork.
While The Stags created ample chances up front, our skipper in between the post was equally vital at the back too, making several crucial saves to keep Tampines firmly in the game and giving us every hope to fight back. Tampines continued to push forward with every ounce of energy, and gave it their all to the 90th minute.
In a decisive late flourish, the home side’s substitutes combined to seal the game in the dying minutes of the game, putting any hopes of a Tampines comeback beyond reach. Lê Văn Đô’s squared the ball across the box to Nguyễn Đình Bắc, who bent the effort into the back of the net within the first minute of added time, extinguishing the Stags' hopes of a late rally, despite their relentless fight throughout the match.
The Battle Continues
While tonight’s might was a tough, high-stakes battle against one of the region’s finest, the final scoreline simply did not reflect the heart and defiance etched across the pitch. If history has taught us anything, it’s that The Stags possess a relentless knack for rising just when the stakes are highest.
The narrative is far from over. Next Wednesday, the battle returns to our home soil for the decisive second leg. With The Stand behind us and 90 minutes of destiny still to be written, the stage is set for an epic night, perhaps also for redemption.
But for now, our boys in Yellow and Black will regroup and pivot our focus briefly to domestic duties in the Singapore Premier League this Saturday, welcoming Albirex Niigata (S) to Our Tampines Hub.
