Stags Show Valiant Effort in Shanghai
The beginning of the Tampines Rovers’ continental campaign brings them to a buzzing Shanghai Stadium. Cheers erupted before kick-off and burst through the night sky as Asia welcomes back it AFC Champions League (ACL) Two for another enthralling season.
Our Stags were gathering momentum under the management of Head Coach Nazri Nasir, securing a 2-0 victory at home against Balestier Khalsa before heading out to Shanghai. On the other hand, Shanghai Shenhua had been struggling in their domestic league, gathering only 12 wins out of 26 games played thus far in the Chinese Super League. The difference in form foretold an interesting match to come.
Changes in Midfield
Understanding the need for more protection at the back, Coach Nazri adopted a 3-5-2 formation, with Faris Ramli and Hide Higashikawa at the top. Koya Kazama returned to the starting line-up, and it was a good sight for fans to see Takeshi Yoshimoto and Irfan Fandi included in the matchday squad.
First Half
In the starting minutes, Shanghai’s Luís Asué was constantly threatening The Stags’ penalty box with his nimble footwork and explosiveness. However, Jacob Mahler’s reliable presence managed to defuse several critical chances against the team.
Despite The Stags swarming each blue jersey on the field, attempting to fight for possession, Xu Haoyang drove deep into Tampines’ defensive zone in the 18th minute and unleashed a driven shot from outside the box into the bottom corner of the net to open the scoring.
Unwilling to go down without a fight, Shah Shahiran received the ball in the 33rd minute and passed it to Faris Ramli, who responded with a deflected shot from the edge of the box and found its way into the net. The scores were levelled.
Inspired by the goal, The Stags launched another counter-attack again in the 34th minute with Hide up top outpacing and swaying past his defenders, but his eventual shot was ultimately denied by Shanghai keeper Xue Qinghao.
Tampines counterpart Syazwan Buhari was also kept busy towards the end of the first half with a series of crucial saves. With the scores tied, Our Stags entered the break confident to pull an upset in Shanghai.
Second Half
The Tampines defence continued to be resilient following the restart but after a series of defensive efforts by The Stags, a corner kick was awarded to Shanghai. Play resumed quickly following the substitution of Faris Ramli for Kenshin Yamazaki, and after a good save by Syazwan to deny a shot from Gao Tianyi, Shanghai’s Shuai Yang pounced on the rebound and headed the ball into the empty net to regain the advantage for the hosts.
The opportunity for Tampines to score a second goal came shortly after. Kenshin, who had been a livewire ever since he came on, sliced through the line of defence, serving a perfect pass to Koya. Unfortunately, his shot was deflected by a sea of blue jerseys.
The closest chance for Our Stags in the second half came in the 78th minute. A corner won by Raoul Suhaimi saw Koya send a beautiful delivery, but it was headed narrowly above the crossbar by Seiga Sumi.
In the 84th minute, Irfan Najeeb and Yuma Kimura were subbed on for Raoul and Koya for fresh legs as they pushed on for an equaliser. However, the bursts of energy by The Stags towards the end were not sufficient for them to complete a comeback.

Reflections
Our Stags showed a brave effort that truly caused some trouble for Shanghai Shenhua. Despite missing out on the second goal, The Stags proved that they could compete against top teams within the continent. Tampines Rovers will no doubt bring this hunger and mentality into the international break and come back stronger than before.
Tampines will be back in action on 7 October as they travel to Sarawak, Malaysia for the season opener of the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup 2026/27 against Kuching City.
