Stags Show Improvement but Fall Short in Phnom Penh

Tampines Rovers travelled to Phnom Penh determined to put on a stronger showing against Preah Khan Reach (PKR) Svay Rieng FC as Our Stags continued their search for their first points of the 2026/27 AFC Champions League (ACL) Two campaign.
Following a difficult 5-1 defeat at Jalan Besar Stadium just seven days earlier, the reverse fixture presented an opportunity for Tampines to demonstrate their response and put the lessons from that encounter into practice.
With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, Our Stags knew that a positive result was crucial to keeping their continental ambitions alive.
And while the final scoreline ultimately favoured the Cambodian champions, Tampines produced a more competitive performance, creating opportunities that could have changed the outcome.
A More Competitive Opening Half
Both sides began the encounter with purpose, exchanging spells of possession while remaining disciplined in defence.
Our Stags fashioned their first notable opportunity in the 19th minute following a neat exchange of passes between Raoul Suhaimi and Naberu Yoshitaka Furusawa.
The Japanese forward latched onto a well-weighted ball behind the Svay Rieng defence, beat his marker and fired an effort towards the near post, but the goalkeeper was equal to the task.
Four minutes later, the hosts came close to breaking the deadlock.
A clever combination between Svay Rieng's Japanese contingent released Ryo Fujii through the Tampines defence.
Finding himself one-on-one with Syazwan Buhari, Fujii rounded the goalkeeper but sent his effort narrowly wide of the target.
The contest remained evenly balanced, with both teams enjoying periods of possession and defending resolutely.
But in the 31st minute, the hosts produced a moment of individual quality.
Tiago Alves picked up possession from approximately 40 metres out before unleashing a thunderous strike that flew into the top corner, leaving Syazwan with little chance.
It was a stunning effort that broke the deadlock and forced Our Stags to regroup.
Despite trailing at the interval, Tampines had shown considerably more composure and organisation than in the previous meeting. The challenge now was to turn that improved performance into goals.
Searching for a Way Back
The hosts threatened shortly after the restart.
In the 48th minute, Svay Rieng intercepted possession in midfield and launched a swift counterattack.
Martins Júnior cut inside before attempting to curl an effort towards goal, but his shot sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
Our Stags responded with an opportunity of their own eight minutes later.
Koya Kazama found space outside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful effort that forced the Svay Rieng goalkeeper Dara Vireak into a parried save.
Hide Higashikawa looked to pounce on the rebound, but a defender reacted quickly to clear the danger before the forward could make contact.
Tampines continued searching for an equaliser, showing greater attacking intent as the second half progressed.
In the 75th minute, Takeshi Yoshimoto and Hide combined neatly down the flank, with the former delivering an inviting cross into the penalty area.
Naberu came agonisingly close to connecting with a header before the ball reached Shodai Yokoyama at the back post.
However, the Svay Rieng defence recovered in time to clear their lines. It was a promising opportunity for Our Stags, but one they would soon be left to rue.
Missed Opportunities Prove Costly
Not long after Tampines had threatened at one end, the hosts struck at the other.
Martins Júnior found space to shoot inside the penalty area, but his effort was blocked by Shah Shahiran. Unfortunately, the loose ball fell kindly to substitute Johannes Tartarotti, who reacted quickest to fire towards goal. Syazwan managed to get a strong hand to the effort but could not prevent it from crossing the line.
It was another setback for Our Stags, who had been pushing to find a way back into the contest.
But Tampines refused to stop searching for a goal.
In the 82nd minute, Koya, who had been influential in midfield throughout the evening, produced a delightful ball over the Svay Rieng defence to release Hide.
The forward found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and attempted a delicate finish over the advancing custodian.
Unfortunately, the ball also cleared the crossbar.
A golden opportunity had gone begging.
Four minutes later, Our Stags fashioned arguably their clearest chance of the evening.
Substitute Kenshin Yamazaki delivered an inviting cross towards the far post, where fellow substitute Yuma Kimura was waiting.
With the goal at his mercy, Yuma was unable to make clean contact with his header, resulting in a scramble inside the penalty area that the hosts eventually survived.
It was a frustrating conclusion to an evening in which Tampines had created several opportunities but lacked the finishing touch.
The final whistle confirmed another defeat on the continental stage.
PKR Svay Rieng FC 2-0 Tampines Rovers.
Reflections
There is no disguising the disappointment of another defeat in the ACL Two, particularly after the memorable continental campaign Our Stags enjoyed last season.
The result effectively brings Tampines' hopes of progressing beyond the group stage to an end, falling short of the ambitions the team had set at the beginning of the competition.
However, Thursday's performance was a notable improvement from the previous encounter at Jalan Besar Stadium.
Our Stags displayed greater defensive discipline, competed more effectively in midfield and created several opportunities that could have altered the course of the match.
The chances that fell to Hide, Naberu and Yuma highlighted the attacking potential within the squad, but also served as reminders of the importance of being clinical at this level.
Ultimately, football is decided by moments, and PKR Svay Rieng made theirs count.
While the improvements are encouraging, the team understands that performances must translate into results.
The disappointment of this continental campaign will be felt throughout the squad, but it must also serve as motivation to improve and grow stronger.
There is still a long season ahead, with important objectives remaining in the Singapore Premier League and the ASEAN Club Championship (ACC) Shopee Cup.
Our Stags have demonstrated their quality in domestic competition, and the challenge now is to rediscover that consistency across every tournament.
Setbacks are part of football, but the response to them will determine how this season is remembered.
The focus must remain on learning from these experiences, staying united and ensuring that the work put in on the training ground is reflected in future performances.
What's Next
After a demanding run of fixtures over the past four to five weeks, Our Stags will welcome a much-needed international break to recover, regroup and prepare for the challenges ahead.
Congratulations to Syazwan Buhari, Jacob Mahler, Raoul Suhaimi and Shah Shahiran, who have received call-ups to represent Singapore in the Mizuho Blue Challenge – The Kallang Football Series.
We wish them all the best as they take to the international stage.
For the rest of the squad, the break presents an important opportunity to recharge and work on the areas that require improvement.
Our Stags will return to competitive action against Ratchaburi FC in the ACC Shopee Cup on 18 November, where they will look to channel their focus towards the competitions still firmly within reach.
The journey is far from over.
