Stags Claim First Three Points at Home

After days of scorching weather, the rain finally poured over Our Tampines Hub, cooling the evening just as things were beginning to heat up for the start of the 2026/27 Singapore Premier League season.

With fans decked out in Tampines colours, it was good to see The Stand back where they belong as Our Stags welcomed Balestier Khalsa for the opening league fixture of the campaign.

Coming off the disappointment of last weekend's Playback Community Shield defeat, Head Coach Nazri Nasir quickly shifted the team's focus towards the challenge ahead.

"It's important to have a good start, and get all three points," he stressed before the match.

And that was exactly what Our Stags delivered.

Defensive Changes

Coach Nazri made two changes to the starting line-up, both at full-back, with Amirul Haikal and Raoul Suhaimi coming into the fold. Shodai Yokoyama was also pushed further forward into his more natural position on the right wing.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested, with both sides enjoying spells of possession.

Tampines came closest early on when a corner found Jacob Mahler inside the area, but his header went over the bar.

Four minutes later, Yuki Kobayashi delivered an inviting cross towards Faris Ramli inside the box, but the skipper's first touch got away from him.

The match briefly swung from end to end. Balestier threatened almost immediately at the other end, only for Jacob Mahler to produce an important block, before Syazwan Buhari comfortably dealt with Jakov Katusa's free-kick from a dangerous position.

As the half progressed, however, Our Stags began to take control.

Set Pieces Make the Difference

Yuki was at the heart of much of Tampines' attacking threat.

In the 25th minute, his superbly struck free-kick looked destined for the bottom corner before Balestier custodian Mario Mustapic managed to push it away at the last moment.

Three minutes later, another dangerous delivery from Yuki finally produced the breakthrough.

His corner caused havoc inside the Balestier penalty area, with Tajeli Salamat inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.

1-0, and Our Stags had opened their account for the new SPL season.

The pressure did not stop there.

In the 39th minute, another pinpoint Yuki free-kick found Dylan Fox who rose for the header, but was flagged offside.

Then, deep into first-half stoppage time, another Yuki delivery was headed clear to the edge of the box. Faris was waiting and connected beautifully with a first-time volley that found the back of the net.

Once again, however, the flag went up.

What began as a relatively even contest had gradually shifted into Tampines' control, and Our Stags headed into the dressing room with a deserved one-goal advantage.

Searching for Breathing Space

The Stags picked up where they left off immediately after the restart.

Seiga Sumi found space on the edge of the box to fire over before some slick combination play inside the Balestier penalty area eventually opened up an opportunity for Shah Shahiran. With The Stand urging him to shoot, Shah obliged, sending his effort agonisingly wide of the bottom corner.

Balestier were not without their moments.

Syazwan comfortably claimed a cross in the 51st minute before being called into much more dramatic action three minutes later. A clever dink looked to be creeping underneath the crossbar, but the Tampines custodian reacted brilliantly, getting his fingertips to the ball to push it over.

Shodai then began to make his presence felt down the right.

In the 58th minute, the Japanese winger escaped his marker and delivered a sweet left-footed cross towards Hide Higashikawa, whose header went wide.

There was briefly more drama in the 68th minute when Balestier's Fudhil Iyadh was shown a red card following a challenge on Faris. After a VAR review, however, the decision was overturned.

Shodai continued to threaten, seeing an effort from the edge of the area blocked in the 74th minute, before Kenshin Yamazaki replaced Faris as Tampines looked to maintain the pressure down the flanks.

And eventually, that pressure paid off.

Shodai Finds Hide

With four minutes of regulation time remaining, Shodai was given space to deliver once again.

This time, his cross was inch-perfect.

Waiting inside the box was Hide, who rose to meet it and powered his header home.

2-0.

After coming agonisingly close on several occasions in the Community Shield, Hide finally had his first goal of the campaign, and Our Stags finally had the breathing space their performance deserved.

There was still time for a couple of milestones, as Yuma Kimura replaced Shodai in the 90th minute to make his official Tampines Rovers debut. Coach Nazri also handed Young Buck Caden Lim his professional debut before he departs for National Service.

Kenshin nearly added a third deep into stoppage time, weaving his way past two defenders before finding himself one-on-one with Mustapic, but the Balestier goalkeeper stood firm to deny him.

Soon after came the final whistle.

Reflections

Three points, a clean sheet, and a winning start to the 2026/27 Singapore Premier League season.

After the disappointment of the Community Shield, Our Stags responded in the best possible fashion with a composed team performance in front of the Home faithful.

There will be little time to dwell on the victory, however. Attention now shifts towards recovery and the continental stage, as Our Stags travel to East Asia in midweek for our return to the AFC Champions League (ACL) Two, where Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua awaits us on Thursday, 17 September.
